Ali Hughes

Professional profile

Ali brings a wide range of senior leadership experience of the education sector to her role as CEO at CORE Education.

Following her tertiary study (BA History/English), Ali worked in secondary school teaching and school management in the UK. On moving to New Zealand, Ali took up the role of Associate Registrar at CPIT and worked there for nine years, leading the Academic Registry and the Student Services Division. During this time she completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Management through Massey University. She also holds a Masters in Business Administration (MBA).

Ali was the Chair of the Board of Trustees at Windsor Primary School for 8 years, and in 2013 she was appointed to the Ministerial Appointed Board for the Waitākiri Primary School, developed from the merger of Windsor and Burwood schools. For a number of years Ali was the President of the Association for Tertiary Education Management, NZ Region, which continued her close links with tertiary education in Australasia. She has been recognised with Fellow status of the NZ Institute of Management and as a Member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors.

Ali is the past Chair of the Board of the Greater Christchurch Schools’ Network, and the Canterbury Tertiary Education Millennial Trust.

Ali was awarded a New Zealander of the Year Local Hero Award in 2014 for her work in education renewal and earthquake recovery in Christchurch.

Ali is currently studying for a Professional Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship through Stanford University.

Ali has served in a number of national positions including providing sector representation on projects with the Ministry of Education and the Department of Work and Income. She also represented the Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics NZ (ITPNZ) on the National Steering Committee on projects with the Ministry of Social Development and the Ministry of Education.

I have lived in Canterbury with my Kiwi family since immigrating to New Zealand in 1996. I am now a proud Cantabrian, and I am committed to working with the local community to rebuilding our beautiful city after the devastation of the earthquakes.
