Growing Leaders in Collaborative Environments


Education environments are becoming more complex, and transforming them so that our ākonga (learners) are ready for, and enthusiastic about, the future is more challenging. What type of leader do you aspire to be? This course will extend you as a leader and help you to make connections between the theoretical understandings and how you can apply them. You will build your networks and grow the necessary frame of mind to enable you to support a highly effective learning culture within your role(s). This course will empower you to lead within your Community of Learning, resulting in improved outcomes for you, your colleagues and your students.

Note: This course was previously advertised as 'Leadership Pathways'.


Participants should have opportunities to engage in intentional acts of leadership with others, either within their own school context or within a learning community / Community of Learning (CoL).

Who is this for

This course is intended for those who are interested in developing their leadership understanding and capability in the current education context of complexity, change and collaboration.  It is suitable for people who are already in positions of responsibility or leadership, and those who aspire to be.

Learning outcomes

Course participants will be able to:

  • gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the current complexities and challenges of modern education leadership in Aotearoa NZ
  • develop understandings and effective strategies for leading collaboratively in a range of contexts
  • explore and apply your understandings of leadership as inquiry
  • develop capability as a strategic leader within communities (including learning communities / Communities of Learning - CoL)

Course format

20 week course divided into four modules (5 weeks per module). 
3-5 professional learning hours per week. 

Each 5 week module includes: 

  • 2 facilitated webinars
  • online learning             


Module 1: Participants will explore current and emerging trends, issues, and opportunities related to education in Aotearoa NZ and investigate key challenges for leadership in their own context.

Module 2: Participants will identify effective strategies, dispositions and intentional acts of leadership that foster collaboration, and examine ways of developing powerful networks, within and external to their context.

Module 3: Participants will familiarise themselves with Leadership as Inquiry, and implement their own leadership inquiry that focuses on an issue or challenge within their context.

Module 4: Participants will unpack key leadership strategies and actions, which they will apply to effectively establish and / or strengthen learning communities / Communities of Learning (CoLs).

Online lesson times will be advised but are typically Monday - Thursday outside of school hours. 


The cost is $830 + GST per person. A discount of 20% applies for groups of 5+ people from the same school or centre.  All prices exclude GST.
