Middle leaders have influential positions within schools, yet they may not be provided with specific middle leadership development to undertake this complex role. Research conducted by Bassett (2012) and Robson (2012) both highlighted the need for middle leadership development and meaningful appraisal. In the absence of a national middle leadership programme, the onus falls on schools to develop and appraise their middle leaders. This online middle leadership programme aims to meet the development needs of those specifically leading from the middle, by examining key principles and practical strategies for their implementation. Senior leaders will also benefit from this course, as they appraise and develop their middle leaders.
This course is recognised as prior learning for postgraduate studies at Unitec Institute of Technology.
Course participants will:
- Be equipped with the knowledge, dispositions and skills to lead with confidence
- Explore a variety of approaches and strategies for developing self, teams, and leading within organisations
- Be empowered to apply their learnings within the context of their school, whilst connecting with Communities of Learners across schools/kura/centres.
20 week course divided into four modules.
Each module consists of two synchronous sessions, plus online activities and support.
Participants should aim to spend two to five hours per week on study and activities associated with this programme.
One follow up synchronous session will be offered to reconnect and reflect on action taken.
Module 1: Understanding Middle Leadership
Leaders will explore the role, expectations and challenges of middle leadership. Using a framework, leaders will identify and assess their leadership capabilities and areas of support.
Module 2: Leading your Team
Leaders will examine the characteristics of effective teams, and explore the dispositions for creating teams, managing conflict and building team capacity.
Module 3: Leading from the Middle
Leaders will explore the principles of shared vision, developing culture, building relationships, and systems and structures.
Module 4: Connecting Community
Leaders will critically reflect on an action they have undertaken as part of their middle leader inquiry, by connecting with their Community of Leaders.
