Recently, Ānaru has had several discussions with his colleague Te Mako Orzecki about te reo Māori, particularly about the pronunciation of their names.

They both agree on the importance of correct pronunciation, and, as former kaiako, can think of several occasions when students’ names were mispronounced. This lead to a disappointing and upsetting reaction from students.

On the other hand, Ānaru has a fond memory of when a former colleague came to him at the start of the year and asked him how to pronounce class list names correctly.

Ānaru and Te Mako also talk about names and experience to highlight the importance of pronunciation and the meaning behind the name.
