Make an impact and take the next step towards becoming a tumuaki (principal)

Pathways to Principalship, an online programme that focuses on transformational leadership, guides middle leaders in education to be inspired and empowered to become a tumuaki (principal).

Facilitated by expert coach, mentor, facilitator and former tumuaki, Sean Bailey, this learning experience will set your passion for leadership ablaze and equip you with the knowledge and confidence to tackle the complex challenges of the tumuaki role.

Learning outcomes

  • Learn about what is at the heart of school leadership.
  • Gain an understanding of the practical and business as usual aspects of being a tumuaki.
  • Collaborate with other like minded leaders about the purpose, approaches, and challenges of school leadership.
  • Explore leadership through a bicultural lens.
  • Reflect on effective leadership strategies and the responsibility of a tumuaki in relation to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.


Meet the facilitator

Sean Bailey


“My goal is to prepare and inspire you to answer the call to school leadership.”

Sean is a former tumuaki and now ICF accredited coach and leadership consultant. His involvement in education spans 25 years. Sean recently led two diverse schools in Aotearoa. His commitment to continuing to develop emergent leaders to be the best version of themselves is backed by a deep understanding of what it takes to provide transformative, equitable outcomes for learning communities. Most recently he was a foundation tumuaki of a new future-focused primary school.
