Hearing from diverse Waitaha voices

This webinar was held on 14 June 2022 and focused on thinking and planning the implementation of the Relationships and Sexuality Education guides from the Ministry of Education.

The guides have been designed to ensure learning about relationships and sexuality is not left to chance.

It brought together diverse voices and insights from Waitaha (Canterbury) across three communities: Māori, Samoan, and rainbow.

Consideration was given to working with the guides in a meaningful way, and creating actionable outcomes. Participants were given the opportunity to ask questions of the following presenters, and Ministry representatives, and to consider what the guidelines might mean in their learning community.

Perspectives on Relationships and Sexuality education were provided by:

  • Maire Kipa, Health advocate, Kahukura Pounamu
  • Jeremy Faumuinā, NZ Police, Moana Vā
  • Rose Cook, InsideOUT
  • Kathryn O’Connell-Sutherland, Te Mahau
  • Lex Davis, CORE Education

Relationships and sexuality education for takatāpuhi and how teachers can support them

In this podcast, CORE Kaihuawaere Ngaio Matua and Accredited Facilitator, Lex Davis discusses his experiences as takatāpui and an educator. Here are some key quotes:

'I sat there wishing the world could swallow me whole...it wasn't a safe space.'

'It was hard to juggle all those little aspects of my personality, in my head and in my heart'

'I could be who I was holistically'

'If you can listen and offer a safe place to be. That can be potentially life-saving to be honest.'
