Tātai Aho Rau has four self-led modules about te Tiriti o Waitangi, available online now!
What is Te Tiriti Ināianei | Te Tiriti Now?
We’ve designed four Tiriti modules that cover areas of interest for all New Zealanders. If the Treaty is brand new to you, if engagement with Māori is part of your job, or if you’d like to delve a little deeper into specific Treaty topics, these modules are for you.
The modules are self-paced and provide an introduction to each topic that you can then learn more about.
Think of these modules as a platform for your next steps in relation to Te Tiriti – a sound basis for learning about a document that is critical to understand where we stand as a bicultural nation today.
Te Tiriti Ināianei modules
Māori history – a definition
‘We walk into the future as we face the past.’
This module introduces us to a Māori definition of history, walking us through the origin stories and the following phases of our history, right up until today. Knowing this history is important to understand how we have been shaped as a nation. We give context about Māori origins, the development of Māori since their arrival in Aotearoa, and the colonial period following the signing of te Tiriti. Enrol in this module to springboard into broader learning about the history of Aotearoa.
Mana wahine – Māori women and te Tiriti
This module celebrates the stories of Māori women who signed te Tiriti. It also describes the status of wāhine Māori from the time of the origin stories, and how we continue to recognise this mana today. This information isn’t always covered in Tiriti programmes, so enrol in this module if you would like to know how many wāhine Māori signed te Tiriti, where they signed, and the approach by Māori and the British to mana wahine in 1840.
Would you have signed te Tiriti in 1840?
It isn’t easy to picture ourselves in 1840, so we’ve created some scenarios to place us in an 1840 mindset. In this module you will be prompted to think about the positions taken by hapū and iwi, and even the positions of the Crown and the Tiriti negotiators. There’s no pressure to sign, but you will learn about events at the time of the signing, and the pros and cons the rangatira might have weighed up when looking into te Tiriti.
Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Being an Ally
Many Tiriti conversations prompt us to think about what it means to be a Tiriti ally. Enrol in this module to look a little into the details of te Tiriti, and the roles and responsibilities allies have taken in their Tiriti journeys. We provide information about some well-known and not-so-known allies and the ways that they started their Tiriti journeys. What are some of the common characteristics of the work they do as allies? This module answers this question and more.
