Improve your bicultural and culturally responsive practices
Aotearoa is a bicultural nation with learning communities that are becoming more diverse and multicultural. This online programme will explore how to better reflect our bicultural heritage and give mana to Te Tiriti o Waitangi in your teaching, as well as how relationships with students, whānau and iwi/hapū can support the engagement and achievement of all students.

By the end of this online programme, you will be able to:
- evaluate your current culturally responsive practices and pedagogy
- implement practical ways in which your learning community might better reflect the bicultural heritage of Aotearoa
- empower ākonga Māori to achieve educational success ‘as Māori’
- meaningfully engage and create partnerships with ākonga, whānau, iwi/hapū and the wider community
- implement strategies into practice that will give mana to Te Tiriti o Waitangi
- integrate more culturally responsive practices.
Who is this for?
This online programme is for leaders and educators in English-medium learning communities who are seeking to improve their bicultural and culturally responsive practices, give mana to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and increase engagement with students, whānau, and iwi/hapū.
Programme format, modules and webinars
20 week online programme, divided into five modules (four weeks per module):
- Ko wai tātou? | Who are we?
- Ko Aotearoa tēnei | This is Aotearoa
- Te eke angitu a te Māori | Māori success
- He whānau kōtahi tātou | We are all whānau
- Whakamanahia Te Tiriti o Waitangi | Give mana to the Treaty of Waitangi
Each module will be supported by two webinars (10 in total), all held late afternoon.
Each module includes a wero (challenge presentation) for participants to work on and share back. Participants are also invited to reflect on each module and self-assess their own progress in relation to culturally responsive and bicultural practices.
Participants will spend approximately 3–5 hours per week engaging with the programme. However, where multiple staff from the same learning community are taking part, participants will likely work together, possibly limiting the time commitment.
Upon completing this CORE online programme, participants will be able to download a digital badge to add to their professional learning e-portfolio.
