Professional profile

Arohanui is a secondary trained teacher with a teaching career in rūmaki and bilingual units within mainstream schools. Such experience has afforded her a sound working knowledge of culturally responsive practice. She has been a te reo Māori and Business Studies teacher, head of department, leader of learning, Kāhui Ako within school teacher, and Relationships First Coach.

Her extensive work within the rūmaki and bilingual spaces has reinforced for her the significant role pūrākau and Kaupapa Māori play in Māori achieving educational success as Māori. Through her work within Kāhui – Communities of Learning she has gained experience and working knowledge of drivers and leavers that effect educational change, and accelerate educational success.

As a Leader of Learning – Rūmaki, Aroha led her team through an inquiry process digging deep into student attendance and achievement in NCEA te reo Māori exams. This process started her on her journey into another inquiry Pūrākau as Pedagogy. Both inquiries and their findings highlighted to Aroha the importance of reflective practice for effective pedagogy, and that there is
never a problem that doesn’t have several possible solutions.

Aroha has been a member of change agent teams, responsible for capability building, coaching and mentoring, supporting teacher in using voices Team to inform and support culturally responsive, agentic practice.

Personal statement

“Ahakoa he iti te matakahi, ka pakaru i a ia te totara”

He uri tēnei nō ngā pito maha o Te Tai Tokerau. He hua tēnei o tōku pā harakeke, me mihi ka tika ki ngā ringa toutou i ahau kia ora pēnei ai.

Flipping the script of education and supporting kura, ākonga and their whānau to experience success as Māori is my driver. My inherent belief that our ākonga are their tūpuna’s greatest dreams realised, drives me in all I do, committing to understanding the stories of each kura, and working collaboratively to achieve the aspirations of their ākonga, whānau and hāpori.
