My language is my awakening, my language is the window to my soul.

The benefits of learning te reo Māori

Te reo Māori is a national taonga, a treasure. It’s part of what makes Aotearoa unique.

Learning te reo Māori:

  • helps to preserve and pass on the cultural heritage of Aotearoa
  • nurtures a sense of inclusion in workplaces and learning environments
  • can help connect us to our culture and identity
  • contextualises place names, greetings and every day reo use
  • develops cultural sensitivity, building an awareness of Māori culture
  • enhances cognitive abilities through bilingualism
  • provides context around Te Tiriti and the history of Aotearoa
  • builds an equity-focused mindset.

At Tātai Aho Rau, we want to empower you to start or continue your reo Māori journey. We believe it’s a taonga worth cherishing, nurturing, and protecting for future generations.
