Te Poipoi Kaiako | Mentor support programme
Supporting mentors, provisional teachers and overseas trained teachers in Aotearoa New Zealand
From 2024, Tātai Aho Rau Core Education is providing professional development support for:
- provisional teachers (PTs) in English medium and Pia in Māori medium settings
- overseas trained teachers (OTTs) with provisional certification
- mentor teachers and Pou Tautoko.
This is a Ministry of Education fully funded service to kura, schools and early learning services. It is being refocused to better meet the needs of mentors, provisional teachers, and overseas trained teachers through improved and nationally consistent PLD guidance.

Tātai Aho Rau Core Education provides this professional development support for those with Tōmua (Provisional Practising Certification) and Tūturu (Full Practising Certification):
- Provisional teachers (PTs) in English medium and Pia in Māori medium settings (Tōmua)
- Overseas trained teachers (OTTs) with Tōmua | provisional certification
- Mentor teachers and Pou Tautoko (Tūturu)
About the workshops
Mō ngā awheawhe
There are 12 face to face workshops across the motu.
There are no costs for kaiako and teachers to attend the workshops.
Refreshments, morning tea and lunch will be provided. However, travel and release costs are not funded.
Workshops run from 9am–3pm; refreshments are available from 8.45am.
The workshops are facilitated in English and te reo Māori and will be adaptive and responsive to the needs of attendees.

In the morning we will:
- begin with whakawhanaungatanga
- explore ‘Our Code, Our Standards’
- delve into the process to move to Tūturu | Full Certification
- learn about supporting our own and others' wellbeing.
After lunch we will collaborate in breakouts in response to what the group would like to focus on, for example:
- effective mentoring practices
- effective professional practice
- time management strategies
- getting the most from release time.

Can’t make it this time? We’ll publish all facilitation materials so that you can use them in your own setting. We will also host 12 more workshops later in the year in different locations across the motu.
