E-portfolios - Fad or Future-Focused?

E-portfolio systems and their adoption by schools and institutions will proliferate in 2007. Students using Web 2.0 applications to store and manage personal files will present a challenge to both the conceptual thinking about portfolios and the technical architecture of the systems.

The tension over who ‘owns’ the portfolio may not be resolved easily in the short term, but the winners will doubtless be the ones that are built on open standards and allow for the easy exchange of data between and among systems.

Look for the release of Mahara for schools, the eCDF developed, open source e-portfolio system later in the year.
