Personal statement

My own school days were not so good, and at age 17 I left to join the Merchant Navy having failed to reach anything like my full potential. The practical and authentic education I received at sea suited my style of learning much better, and I flourished. I had time to read, which I did voraciously. When I came ashore aged 40, I determined to give back, and to do my small part in making education better for young adults coming up through the system.
